The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Peter Anthony Kacerguis, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Troop C, 7th Armored Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 12 January 1970. Captain Kacerguis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander on a Command and Control helicopter during an Air Cavalry reconnaissance mission near the Cambodian border. As the lead element of an aero- scout team landed in an enemy infested area to extract a wounded aviator whose light observation helicopter (LOH) had been downed by enemy ground fire, he maneuvered his aircraft to cover the rescue team as they performed their mission. Flying through a hail of enemy bullets, he moved his craft toward the advancing enemy force, enabling his door gunner to keep the insurgent force pinned down until the rescue operation was completed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 9333 (September 21, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Peter Anthony Kacerguis, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop C, 7th Armored Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry Regiment, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 12 April 1970. Captain Kacerguis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Mission Commander of an Air Cavalry Troop five miles west of Landing Zone CRYSTAL in Binh Dihn Province. After the lead light observation helicopter had been riddled by enemy gunfire and had burst into flames, the pilot autorotated to a small area surrounded by enemy gun emplacements. Captain Kacerguis unhesitatingly elected to land his aircraft between the downed crew and two enemy machine gun positions, affording the defenseless aviators protection. Realizing that one of the airmen was critically wounded, he seized a weapon, dismounted, and raced some thirty meters to the pinned down aviators. The unarmed men, seeking refuge from the enemy bullets by hiding behind a small dike, were quickly organized by Captain Kacerguis. Taking advantage of the massive firepower afforded by a hovering helicopter gunship, he hastily led the men to the waiting aircraft, blazing the way with his personal weapon. After his aircraft was maneuvered from the bullet swept area, he deposited the down aviators, re-fueled and re-armed the aircraft, then returned to the area of operations. He remained on station throughout the day, flying low and slow to mark positions for gunships and airstrikes. His unquestionable valor and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
