The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) Craig A. Hancock, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilots aboard a cargo helicopter in support of allied ground forces. En route to their home base after completing all their assigned missions, they were diverted to an emergency re-supply of a fire support base. They picked up the first load of supplies and started toward the fire support base in total darkness. En route they encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire and intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, but they elected to complete the mission. Upon their approach to the fire base, the enemy began directing a barrage of rocket and mortar fire on the allied position. With complete disregard for their own safety, they repositioned their aircraft amid the rocket and mortar fire to pick up wounded allied soldiers. Even when the aircraft began taking numerous hits from enemy small arms fire and the enemy artillery fire drew nearer, these men maintained their position until all of the wounded were loaded onto their aircraft. As they began their departure, a mechanical failure resulted in the spewing of hot hydraulic fluid into the cockpit. They brought their stricken aircraft under control and continued the flight. Only through their professional ability and selfless actions were the wounded rescued and the aircraft saved from further damage. Their intrepidity, determination and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves. Their unit, and the United States Army.
