The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Tallmadge J. Haas, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Pilot near Duc Pho, Republic of Vietnam on 17 June 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Haas volunteered to attempt a night emergency air evacuation mission into an unlighted 1000 foot strip located in a valley bordered by an 800 foot hill which was under heavy hostile attack. Although several low passes through heavy hostile fire were required to identify the blacked out landing zone, the crew succeeded in evacuating seventeen ambulatory and eight critically wounded litter patients to the safety of Qui Whoa Hospital, where all survived. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Haas reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
