The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer David L. Grubb, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 July 1970. Warrant Officer Grubb distinguished himself while serving as pilot of an AH-1G armed helicopter during an emergency extraction mission near Fire Support Base Ripcord, Republic of Vietnam. Upon reaching the landing zone, Warrant Officer Grubb’s aircraft came under intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Warrant Officer Grubb placed suppressive fire on the enemy positions to allow the lift helicopter to extract the beleaguered friendly troops. When a medical evacuation helicopter crashed in the landing zone, Warrant Officer Grubb provided heavy return fire on the insurgents, enabling a rescue aircraft to extract the downed crew. Warrant Officer Grubb’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
