Griffiths, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by his voluntary actions above a beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. He distinguished himself by his exceptional valorous actions on 21 April 1970 as his helicopter began to approach a landing zone. Suddenly and unexpectedly they received intense ground fire. He immediately began placing a heavy barrage of suppressive fire on the hostile positions as the aircraft hovered over the landing site.
