The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Technical Sergeant Herbert W. Greuter, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a 130B Flight Engineer near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam on 16 February 1968. On that date, Sergeant Greuter was flying an airdrop mission in support of the besieged United States Marine base at Khe Sanh. While flying at a low altitude and airspeed over unfriendly territory the crew discovered that the aircraft cargo door and ramp would not close. Sergeant Greuter succeeded in effecting an in- flight correction of this serious malfunction, although to do so it was necessary for him to work near the open ramp while the aircraft was buffeted by turbulence and exposed to hostile fire. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Greuter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
