The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Frank T. Gresik, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, Warrant Officer Gresik distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of an armed helicopter engaged in a visual reconnaissance mission near Vinh Long. When directed to make an extraction of friendly infantry, the flight of four life aircraft started a descent to the pick up zone. As the lead ship was about to land, the flight came under heavy automatic weapons fire from a nearby tree line. On short final into the landing zone, Warrant Officer Gresik’s aircraft sustained numerous hits resulting in heavy aircraft damage. Remaining calm and composed, Warrant Officer Gresik completed his approach. Immediately on touchdown, his aircraft was hit several more times with armor piercing rounds this time wounding the door gunner in the leg. Ordered to break contact immediately, he lifted off and flew the seriously damaged aircraft back to Vinh Long to effect the quickest possible medical treatment for his wounded gunner. Through his aggressive actions and extraordinary courage in close combat against a numerically superior hostile force, Warrant Office Gresik contributed immeasurably to the successful completion of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
