The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Richard M. Greenfield, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight 26 June 1945. These individuals flew as combat crew members of a B-29 aircraft based in the Mariana Islands on a bombing mission against the Nagoya arsenal, Nagoya, Japan. Two hours before reaching the enemy coast the number three engine developed a serious malfunction necessitating the feathering of the propeller. Rather than turn back or bomb an alternate target they were determined to join their formation and strike the vital objective for which they had been briefed. Disregarding the fact that they would be singled out by enemy fighters because of their dead engine, and flying in the vulnerable flank position, they held their place in the formation and dropped their bombs with devastating effect on the target. As soon as they were out of range of the intense and accurate flak that they encountered in the target area, enemy fighters dived in relentlessly in coordinated attacks trying to knock out their crippled Superfort. Their plane suffered several direct hits which rendered the entire gunnery system inoperative. By keeping their plane in the formation for protection until leaving the danger area this crew was able to bring their damaged B-29 safely back to the home base. The courage and determination of these veterans of repeated combat sorties contributed materially to the success of this mission. Their actions reflect great credit on themselves and the Army Air Forces.
