The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Samuel P. Givhan, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Givhan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while flying in support of Operation Seven Mountains. He flew visual reconnaissance, artillery adjustment and control missions in support of the operation. Ignoring intense .50 caliber machine gun fire and inclement weather conditions, he was able time after time to locate enemy firing positions and adjust artillery on them. When allied wounded required extraction, he immediately took charge of the difficult operation. He controlled medevac aircraft and gunships throughout the difficult mission protecting the wounded and adjusting suppressing fire. Utilizing sound judgment and stopping only to refuel, Captain Givhan controlled the aircraft and ground situation, repeatedly exposing himself to intense .50 caliber machine gun fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
