The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) George W. Freas, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as navigator of a B-l7 type aircraft. on 12 September 1943, Lieutenant Freas flew in an attack upon an enemy airdrome at Frosinone, Italy. Upon the approach to the target, intense antiÑaircraft fire enveloped the formation heavily damaging the lead plane and forcing the pilot to turn from the bomb run. Displaying superior professional skill and resourcefulness as his pilot maneuvered his aircraft into the lead position. Lieutenant Freas quickly guided the bombers back on course. Then aiding his bombardier in setting course for the run over the objectives Lieutenant Freas enabled the B-17’s to cover the target area with a devastating bomb pattern. His outstanding proficiency in combat and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
