The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Flight Officer Don R. Fisher, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement, while serving as Tail Gunner in the leading aircraft of a division formation on a bombing mission over Germany, 11 January 1944. Due to extremely adverse weather conditions, the formation, except for the Combat Wing in which Flight Officer Fisher was flying, returned prior to reaching the objective. As a result, this small formation was subjected to unusually savage assaults by a large number of enemy planes. Exhibiting courage and the utmost skill, Flight Officer Fisher defended his aircraft against these vicious attacks and in addition was able to keep the wing commander constantly informed of the condition of the formation, thereby enabling him to maintain a tight defensive unit. The courage, cool judgment and exceptional skill displayed by Flight Officer Fisher materially aided in successful completion of the mission. Entered military service from Texas.
