The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant George D. Dyer, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Dyer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 May 1968, while serving as a Pilot with Troop D, 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division, on a medical evacuation mission near Thon Gia Diang, Vietnam. Severe electrical storms, high winds and rain had forced down all aircraft flying over a troop which later came in contact with a large North Vietnamese Army force. Upon hearing that two seriously wounded cavalrymen were in need of immediate evacuation, Lieutenant Dyer unhesitatingly volunteered to pilot his light observation helicopter to attempt a recovery. Flying at treetop level under exceedingly difficult weather conditions, Lieutenant Dyer effected a landing immediately behind the point of contact, picked up the casualties and conveyed them to the squadron aid station. He then returned to the battle area and employed his helicopter as a command and control ship until a break in the storm allowed other aircraft to relieve him. First Lieutenant Dyer’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
