The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Steven H. Dillman, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Dillman distinguished himself on 14 April 1967 while serving as Aircraft Commander of a helicopter taking part in a combat assault in support of the 5th ARVN Division. On the second lift into the area, the formation came under withering Viet Cong fire. Warrant Officer Dillman’s aircraft received multiple hits in the cabin area killing one of the soldiers on board and wounding two others. He successfully landed his riddled aircraft in the area and, once the troops were unloaded, he flew the aircraft out through the heavy enemy fire and began issuing instructions to the gunners on administering first aid to the badly wounded soldiers. Disregarding the conditions of his own ship and heavy sniper fire in the area, he returned to the area of operations to assist in the recovery of downed aircraft. Only when he was assured that all the crews and ships had reach safety did he return to the pick up zone to inspect his own aircraft. Upon determining his aircraft was still flyable, he went on two more lifts into the same hazardous area despite heavy hostile fire and growing darkness. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
