The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Robert Dennis, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an UC-123 Pilot over the Republic of Vietnam on 31 October 1966. On that date, Colonel Dennis was flying the third aircraft in a three ship flight of unarmed UC-123 spray aircraft engaged in attacking a strategic crop destruction and defoliation target when his aircraft encountered intense ground fire. Despite the hostile fire and severe aircraft damage causing a loss of power on one engine, he courageously pressed the attack until the mission was completed. Only then did he pull off the target, shut down his failing engine, and effect a safe recovery of the aircraft and crew. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Dennis reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
