The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Ronald O. Dean, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an KC-135 Aircraft Commander in support of the Air Force mission in Southeast Asia on 10 October 1972. On that date Captain Dean flew an exceptionally dangerous mission that was made more so by serious aircraft malfunctions. Flying in support of B-52’s out of Andersen, AB, Guam, Captain Dean’s aircraft experienced engine failure while on its way to the refueling area. At this heavy gross weight three engine operation was a risk at best but he proceeded fuel dumping operations and recovery procedures. Upon return to the base excessive gust conditions hampered an already dangerous situation. Only through fully professional techniques and skill was the aircraft and its crew safely recovered thereby averting a major aircraft and crew loss. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Dean reflect great credit upon himself and the Untied States Air Force.
