The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Michael E. Coonrod, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Coonrod distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of the lead aircraft of a flight of five transport helicopters in support of a friendly ground unit. As the flight touched down in the first landing zone, Chief Warrant Officer Coonrod’s aircraft suddenly came under intense enemy machine gun fire. Bullets smashed through the windshield and the radio compartment inflicting serious wounds upon him. As the friendly troops were unloading from the aircraft, several were wounded immediately and re-boarded the ship. On take-off Chief Warrant Officer Coonrod’s aircraft was again riddled by the overwhelming enemy fire with several more bullets smashing into the helicopter’s vital areas. With complete disregard for his own wounds, he courageously flew his aircraft to Binh Thuy where medical personnel were standing by to care for the wounded. Chief Warrant Officer Coonrod’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself his unit, and the United States Army.
