The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Transportation Corps) Charles L. Calvert, United States Army, for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Lieutenant Colonel Calvert distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as Commanding Officer of the 58th Transportation Battalion. He spent many hours over hostile enemy territory at the controls of a helicopter visiting the activities of the supported and supporting combat commands, to provide the professional managerial insight necessary to accomplish the mission of supporting the combat arms. His aggressive and totally professional airmanship proved to communicate a sense of responsibility that was both inspiring and contagious. He displayed a constant awareness of the complexities of airmobile warfare, and as a result of his aviation expertise and professionalism he has contributed immeasurably to the combat success of Army aviation. His continued aerial accomplishments have culminated in an enviable record of successful mission accomplishment. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
