The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Sixth Class Hugh L. Buzzell, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Six Buzzell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 19 April 1968, while serving as a flight engineer on an armed helicopter during a combat support mission in the Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. While participating in the movement of artillery emplacements into enemy-controlled terrain, Specialist Buzzell exposed himself to the intense hostile ground fire as his aircraft landed with its vital cargo. Although his helicopter received several hits and he was wounded in the action, Specialist Buzzell continued to place effective suppressive fire on numerous insurgent positions in the embattled area. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
