The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant James P. Butler, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a CV2 Crew Chief at Boun Bleck Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam on 23 December 1966. On that date. Sergeant Butler volunteered to participate on an emergency resupply of food to and an emergency air evacuation mission from Boun Bleck. This special Forces Camp had not received a food resupply for over two weeks because of weather conditions and a Special Forces Montagnard striker was dying from advanced malaria. Facing extremely hazardous weather conditions and threat from intense hostile fire, Sergeant Butler, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, displaying unwavering calmness and courage, assisted in completing the food resupply and contributed immeasurably in saving the life of a Special Forces Montagnard striker. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Butler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
