The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Clark A. Burnett, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Burnett distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 12 January 1970 near Phuoc Vinh in the Republic of Vietnam. While serving as Aircraft Commander of a helicopter gunship, he directed the extraction of an ambush patrol that was in enemy contact. When D Troop engaged a superior sized enemy force and sustained casualties, Lieutenant Colonel Burnett responded to the extraction call with his personal aircraft. When they arrived at the contact site, his aircraft was the only helicopter in visual contact with the friendly elements so he directed his craft to land in the fire zone to make his position the rallying point for the extraction helicopters. His aircraft remained on the ground until two personnel (one wounded) were aboard. As the aircraft took off, it flew close to the enemy’s treeline positions and, he directed his gunners to strafe the area with the helicopter’s organics, silencing the enemy. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
