The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Michael C. Baker, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, Sergeant Baker distinguished himself while serving as aerial observer of an aero-scout team on a search and destroy mission near Di An. Intense barrages of hostile fire met his team as they entered the area. While the aircraft remained at a dangerously low altitude, he immediately began suppressing the enemy fire with his M-79 grenade launcher and automatic rifle. Although his ship had sustained several hits, and extensive damage had been incurred, he remained undaunted and continued delivering his highly suppressive fire upon the enemy forces. When all of his ammunition had been expended, he attempted to kill two enemy troops by means of his .38 caliber pistol. While firing upon the enemy with his pistol, both he and his pilot were seriously wounded. After first aid had been administered, he bravely volunteered to continue with this mission. Through his courage and personal bravery, he was truly instrumental in the successful annihilation of the enemy soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
