The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles F. Aiello, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander of a C-47 flareship near Ham Tan, Republic of Vietnam on 5 and 6 May 1967. During this period, the crew of Moonshine 45 was diverted to Ham Tan where two Army of the Republic of Vietnam outposts had been overrun following a heavy mortar and automatic weapons attack. For two hours Captain Aiello and his crew provided illumination flares for patrol and medical evacuation operations. When a med-evac helicopter radioed that there were more injured than could be properly handled, Captain Aiello and his crew, despite the marginal weather and unlighted airstrip, landed and picked up eleven critically injured Vietnamese and flew them to Tan Son Nhut Air Base. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Aiello reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
