The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer 1 (WO-1) Charles A. Adkinson, III, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Adkinson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 16 November 1969, while serving with Troop A, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry in the Republic of Vietnam. Going to an area of heavy enemy contact, Warrant Officer Adkinson attempted to extract an enemy fifty-one caliber machine gun with a hook, but was unsuccessful. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he landed his aircraft in the enemy infested area and placed heavy volumes of suppressive fire on the hostile positions, enabling his crew to recover the weapon and place it on the aircraft, thus denying the enemy its use. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
