The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Third Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Norman W. Flinn, Jr. (ASN: 0-30651), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement as Pilot of a Plane in Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron Five Hundred Thirteen during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 4 May 1952. Conducting a night intruder mission over enemy main supply routes, Captain Flinn sighted a hostile truck convoy proceeding through mountainous terrain and, requesting illumination from an accompanying aircraft, immediately initiated a series of daring low-level bombing and strafing attacks, succeeding in destroying four of the enemy vehicles and four nearby buildings. By his expert airmanship, courageous initiative and unswerving devotion to duty, Captain Flinn contributed materially to the success of his unit in inflicting heavy damage on the enemy’s supply line and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
