The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant John H. Webb, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight. First Lieutenant Webb distinguished himself by heroic actions on 20 March 1969, while serving with Company A, 25th Aviation Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. While on resupply mission in support of a friendly ground unit, Lieutenant Webb was informed that the unit was in contact with an enemy force. Upon arriving over the contact area, Lieutenant Webb’s helicopter came under intense small arms fire. Immediately he called for a strobe light to mark the landing zone, but only flares were available. Due to the poor visibility, Lieutenant Webb assisted the pilot in landing the aircraft. Once on the ground, Lieutenant Webb directed in the unloading of the ship’s supplies under intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the insurgents. Lieutenant Webb’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25 Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
