The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant John H. Webb, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight. First Lieutenant Webb distinguished himself by heroic actions on 8 October 1968, while serving as a pilot with Company A, 25th Aviation Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. When the 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry came under an intense hostile attack, Lieutenant Webb was instructed to direct counter mortar fire for the friendly unit. After successfully suppressing the enemy shelling, the need for support against severe ground attack arose. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Webb flew at a dangerously low level in order to place devastating fire on the charging aggressors. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thwarting of the insurgents’ attack and the success of the mission. Lieutenant Webb’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
