The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Commander Alfred G. Siebecke, United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight against the enemy as bombardier navigator of a jet aircraft while attached to Attack Squadron FIFTY-TWO embarked on U.S.S. KITTY HAWK (CVA 63). On 1 May 1972, Lieutenant Commander Siebecke flew in the lead aircraft of a division of attack aircraft in a highly successful coordinated air wing strike against a strategic enemy petroleum storage area located near Thanh Hoa, North Vietnam. Undaunted by airborne enemy interceptors and heavy anti-aircraft artillery, he navigated his division with precision to the target area where he assisted his pilot in executing a devastating attack placing all ordnance on target. Over one million gallons of petroleum products were destroyed or rendered useless to the enemy during the course of this battle. Lieutenant Commander Siebecke’s exemplary courage, leadership and devotion to duty which reflects credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
