The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Richard E. Shores, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 July 1970. Warrant officer Shores distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H lift helicopter during the evacuation of Fire Support Base Ripcord, Republic of Vietnam. While inserting friendly troops to assist in the evacuation of the casualties and equipment, Warrant Officer Shores’ aircraft came under intense anti-aircraft fire. Later in the day he made numerous trips to the besieged firebase to extract personnel and equipment. After completing the evacuation of the firebase, Warrant Officer Shores subjected himself to the intense fire as he aided in the extraction of two beleaguered companies. Due to the hostile fire, he could not land his aircraft and hovered just above the ground as the casualties were loaded aboard his aircraft. Warrant Officer Shores’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
