The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John C. Morrissey, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the pilot of a Republic F-105 Thunderchief on 12 May 1968. On that date, Captain Morrissey was a member of a flight returning from its primary target to home base when a request for assistance was received from the Airborne Command and Control Center. Captain Morrissey’s flight volunteered and was advised a friendly outpost was being overrun. Captain Morrissey arrived at the outpost and made repeated close support strafing attacks, braving heavy ground fire, while evacuation was in progress. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Morrissey reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
