The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant Charles L. Gant, Jr., United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States on 6 May 1970, while serving as a Pilot with Company B, 25th Aviation Battalion, 25th Infantry Division , in the Republic of Vietnam. While flying a combat support mission, a fellow pilot began experiencing engine failure and was required to attempt an emergency landing. When the crippled aircraft crashed upon landing, First Lieutenant Gant landed his aircraft near the burning helicopter. Despite the flames and danger of exploding ammunition, First Lieutenant Gant unhesitatingly removed the injured personnel from the burning aircraft and carried them to safety. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to saving the lives of two fellow Soldiers. The bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty exhibited by First Lieutenant Gant are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
