The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant David Ian Drummond, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a C-7A aircraft at Katum, Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam on 4 May 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Drummond made a successful tactical approach, offload, and departure of the field, but after takeoff the aircraft came under hostile automatic ground fire. Evasive maneuvers were employed by Lieutenant Drummond while checking the engine instruments for possible engine or system damage and maintaining close crew coordination through a successful landing at the nearest airfield. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Drummond reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
