The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David B. Bradley, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, Captain Bradley distinguished himself by heroic actions on 22 August 1967, while serving as pilot of an unarmed H-23 helicopter with the 2d Battalion, 77th Artillery, in the Republic of Vietnam. When he overheard a call for ammunition resupply from a Special Forces unit in heavy contact with the Viet Cong, Captain Bradley, immediately offered his assistance and flew to the Prek Klek Special Forces Camp to pick up desperately needed ammunition and smoke grenades. Unfazed by reports of heavy ground fire, Captain Bradley took off from Prek Klek in his H-23 and proceeded to the vicinity of the designated landing zone. Since the ground forces had not yet arrived and with complete disregard of his own safety, Captain Bradley circled the hazardous area for almost an hour remaining close to the landing zone so he could give immediate support to the ground unit when it arrived. Captain Bradley’s willingness to fly into and remain over an extremely hazardous area in a light unarmed helicopter contributed immeasurably to the successful completion of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. His personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
