The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain William R. Bradfield, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 7 July 1968. On that date, Captain Bradfield flew to the aid of a friendly company which was surrounded and pinned down by a large hostile force. Captain Bradfield successfully directed tactical airpower against the aggressor, who constantly fired at his small aircraft. Because of his superior airmanship, the friendly company was relieved of the hostile pressure and was able to gain the offensive. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bradfield reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
