The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Peter B. Anker, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a RF-101 reconnaissance pilot over North Vietnam on 3 December 1968. On that date, Captain Anker participated in a special reconnaissance mission which required split vertical photography of a large area including the entire Demilitarized Zone and a large region of the southern panhandle of North Vietnam. In spite of marginal weather conditions inhibiting precise navigation and the continuous threat of lethal fire from concentrated anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missile sites, Captain Anker accurately flew his unarmed and unescorted aircraft over the hostile target area and successfully obtained his assigned target. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Anker reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
