The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Charles Oliver Bierman (MCSN: 0-5058), United States Marine Corps, for meritorious achievement in connection with operations against the enemy Japanese forces while serving as a landing force transport quartermaster during the planning for, and the seizure of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 14 October 1944 to 26 March 1945. During the planning phase, Lieutenant Colonel Bierman was charged with the highly important and complicated task of preparing the plans and orders for the embarkation of large numbers of troops and supplies including the adjustment of shipping requirements between assault and garrison echelons. Since the landing force elements were widely separated, it was only with great difficulty and constant devotion to duty that he successfully formulated the plans and orders that culminated in the successful landing and the steady flow of much needed supplies during the campaign. During the operation he constantly kept himself informed of the situation and was of invaluable assistance to his commander at all times. By his outstanding demonstration of his professional knowledge and untiring efforts, he was an inspiration to those working with him and those under his direction. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
