The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Charles Oliver Bierman (MCSN: 0-5058), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to the Government of the United States as Transport Quartermaster of the THIRD Marine Division, during the operations against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, from 10 April to 10 August 1944. Skilled and untiring in the performance of duty, Lieutenant Colonel Bierman rendered invaluable assistance to the Commanding General in planning the loading of personnel, supplies and equipment and, remaining aboard a transport after the Division’s arrival at Guam, expertly directed the landing of equipment and supplies, rushing ammunition and other vital cargo requested by the forces ashore. His professional skill, sound judgment and devotion to the fulfillment of a vital assignment were important factors in the success of the campaign and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
