The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Hayne D. Boyden (MCSN: 0-99), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism, initiative, coolness and excellent judgment when on 16 July 1927, while in command of an air patrol of two planes, during an insurrection in Nicaragua he discovered the small Marine detachment at Ocotal to be besieged by a vastly superior force. Lieutenant Boyden immediately dispatched one plane for reinforcements and then in the face of heavy hostile fire heroically proceeded single-handed to the attack. This prompt and courageous action undoubtedly proved an important factor in the eventual relief of the beleaguered garrison.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Colonel Hayne D. Boyden (MCSN: 0-99), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in a Marine Aircraft Wing on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, as Chief of Staff and, at intervals, as Acting Wing Commander, from 8 December 1944 to 30 June 1945. Colonel Boyden was largely responsible for preparing the wing for the operation, procuring equipment and personnel, arranging transportation, assigning and training officers and non-commissioned officers to specific duties, and coordinating the entire organization into a smooth functioning combat unit. In command of the rear echelon after embarkation of the assault unit, he was responsible for completing preparations for the movement of his troops and equipment. Landing on Okinawa on 1 May, he was indefatigable in carrying on the details of administration under the Commanding General, being especially diligent in arranging for the security of the camp and effecting physical improvements. He carried on his work in exposed areas heedless of danger, and his disregard of personal safety was an inspiration to the entire command. His loyalty, professional skill and zealous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Colonel Boyden is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
