Bourne, Jr. (MCSN: 0-97), United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in successfully piloting an air plane of the type Fokker TA-1-7562 in an unguarded flight across the Gulf of Mexico in 13 hours and 45 minutes from Miami, Florida to Managua, Nicaragua, on 14 January 1928. On his arrival in Nicaragua, Major Bourne assumed command of the Aircraft Squadrons, Second Brigade, United States Marine Corps operating in Nicaragua against hostile bandit forces, As Commander of the Aircraft Squadrons, he distinguished (remainder of citation missing).
