The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert Hill Taylor (MCSN: 490388), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Acting Squad Leader of a Demolition Squad serving with Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on 4 March 1945. When the advance of his company was held up by heavy machine gun and rifle fire from a series of fortifications to its front, Corporal Taylor crawled forward alone through withering hostile fire to place a heavy demolition charge in the most important of the enemy pillboxes and succeeded in destroying it. By his indomitable courage and total disregard for his own life, Corporal Taylor enabled his company to advance and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
