The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Odis Stone (MCSN: 936360), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the seizure of Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. Severely wounded while fighting off a persistent Japanese night attack against his battalion’s positions at the base of Mount Suribachi, Corporal Stone steadfastly refused to be evacuated and, continuing to wage battle with unrelenting fury despite the terrific odds, succeeded in annihilating five of the enemy before the seriousness of his own condition forced his evacuation. Stouthearted and indomitable in the face of the enemy’s ruthless assault tactics, Corporal Stone rendered gallant service in defense of his station and his undaunted courage, tenacious determination and resolute fortitude throughout the bitter conflict upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
