The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal LeRoy B. Stenberg (MCSN: 507676), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Group Leader, serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 26 February to 3 March 1945. Fearlessly disregarding all personal danger, Corporal Stenberg crawled forward over hazardous terrain to neutralize an enemy pillbox which was impeding his platoon’s advance. Exposing himself to constant hostile fire, he succeeded in placing a demolition charge and annihilating the position, thereby clearing a field of advance for his platoon. Persisting in his valiant efforts, Corporal Stenberg again risked his life on 3 March, to crawl through Japanese sniper fire to aid a wounded comrade, but was himself mortally wounded. His bold initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and self-sacrificing devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Stenberg and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
