The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jack Richard Starr (MCSN: 419858), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Armorer with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, on 3 and 15 March 1945. On 3 March, when a guide was seriously wounded while leading a working party bringing supplies and ammunition to the front, Sergeant Starr unhesitatingly assumed command, scouted the area to find a safe route to the front lines and, after leading the party there safely, returned to the wounded guide, administered first aid and carried him to the rear. On 15 March, when several of the enemy rushed the company command post from a by-passed cave, he discovered and killed three of the attackers immediately and was himself killed while pursuing a fourth who was escaping. His courageous fighting spirit and utter disregard for his own personal safety reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Starr and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
