The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Clarence Francis Sobba (MCSN: 458441), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Rifle Squad, serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 26 February 1945. Fearlessly exposing himself to shattering machine-gun, mortar and antitank gunfire laid down by the enemy, Sergeant Sobba gallantly directed a platoon of tanks through the front lines in a vigorous attack against a heavily fortified hostile position. With the tanks unable to spot targets accurately, he unhesitatingly advanced to the leading vehicle and, despite the unceasing barrage, boldly directed its fire by telephone before proceeding to two additional tanks to carry out the devastating strike. Determined to consolidate the positions, he continued his bold efforts, inspiring his squad in the spearhead thrust and contributing to the success of the bitterly fought engagement before he was fatally struck down by hostile fire. By his daring leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds, Sergeant Sobba aided materially in combating a fanatic enemy during the Iwo campaign and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
