The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Roy V. Smith (MCSN: 431708), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Squad leader with an Assault Rifle Company while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 3 March 1945. When the advance of his company was held up by intense, accurate machine-gun and sniper fire, Sergeant Smith volunteered to lead a patrol of men and two tanks into strongly fortified enemy territory and through his capable leadership and direction enabled the tanks to destroy two positions before he himself was mortally wounded and the patrol forced to withdraw because of fire from a previously undisclosed position. His courageous fighting spirit and total disregard for his own safety reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Smith and the Unites States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
