The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Edward Sellers (MCSN: 514745), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Member of a Machine Gun Platoon while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 14 March 1945. Taken by surprise when a vastly superior enemy force launched a fierce counterattack on the left flank of his company, Private Sellers turned his machine gun and directed a stream of deadly fire on the attackers, annihilating five of the aggressors before his weapon was destroyed by an enemy grenade. Although seriously wounded in the exchange of hostilities, he remained steadfast at his post despite the tremendous odds and quickly opened fire with his rifle, killed two more of the enemy before he collapsed and succumbed to mortal wounds. An indomitable fighter, Private Sellers by his resolute fortitude and unwavering devotion to duty during a critical situation, contributed essentially to the annihilation of the attacking force and his cool courage throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval; Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
