The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Vladimir Walter Rusen (MCSN: 435042), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Acting Leader of a Rifle Platoon while serving with Company F, Second battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 1 to 14 March 1945. When his platoon leader fell before a terrific barrage of enemy machine-gun and rifle fire which inflicted numerous casualties and drove his unit back from a strategic objective, Sergeant Rusen voluntarily assumed command of the disorganized platoon, rallied them for a continued assault and, pressing forward with indomitable fighting spirit and cool courage, advanced alone to the top of the ridge. By his complete disregard for his own personal safety in braving the intensive hostile barrage, he inspired his comrades to launch a second fierce attack in which they succeeded in regaining and reoccupying the high ground. A skillful and courageous leader, Sergeant Rusen directed his platoon and contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of his company’s missions until he was killed by enemy fire. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
