The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant Nathan James Roundy (MCSN: 292111), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Gunnery Sergeant while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 2 and 3 March 1945. Seeing his company commander seriously wounded by enemy fire during an advance on Hill 382 on 2 March, Gunnery Sergeant Roundy unhesitatingly moved to his rescue through deadly sniper fire, killing a Japanese soldier who attempted to stop him by throwing hand grenades and, with the aid of a companion, evacuated the wounded officer to a place of safety. On 3 March, he again advanced in the face of intense hostile small-arms fire to the aid of a fatally wounded comrade and, after administering first aid, was retracing his perilous journey to procure a stretcher for the casualty when he himself was mortally wounded. By his daring initiative and self-sacrificing efforts in behalf of others, Gunnery Sergeant Roundy was an inspiration to his men and his cool courage throughout was inspiration to his men and his cool courage throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
