The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert E. Reigner (MCSN: 527150), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Group Leader in a platoon of Company G, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Japanese-held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 6 March 1945. When the Japanese inflicted heavy casualties and disorganized his platoon during an attack against a heavily fortified position, Private First Class Reigner located an enemy machine gun in a pillbox and, braving the merciless fire from the automatic weapon, made his way to the position and hurled two hand grenades, killing the occupants of the pillbox and silencing the enemy weapon. His cool courage and heroic performance of duty in the face of grave danger, enabled his platoon to reorganize and continue the attack and reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Reigner and the United States Naval Service.
