The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Oliver F. Promnitz (MCSN: 275927), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment, at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands on 15 February 1942. During the course of an enemy artillery bombardment on Fort Mills, Private First Class Promnitz without regard for his personal safety voluntarily left a place of shelter and assisted in the removal of wounded Navy personnel from the south dock over ground exposed to enemy fire. Private First Class Promnitz’s display of gallantry was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects distinct credit upon himself and the United States Marine Corps.
