The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Jean Wilfred Moreau (MCSN: 0-5280), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, 15 and 16 May 1945. Assigned the mission of seizing Conical Hill during the siege of the Naha-Shuri line, Lieutenant Colonel Moreau successfully led his battalion in a daring assault on this Japanese key-point position. Constantly braving hostile fire to maintain the attack despite fierce enemy counter-attacks which inflicted heavy casualties in his battalion, he arrived at his assigned objective and, aware that an enemy counter-attack was imminent, made his way forward, conducted a reconnaissance and deployed his forces in a sound defense. Although severely wounded while inspecting his position, Lieutenant Colonel Moreau had contributed materially to the success of his battalion in winning and holding a vital position against strong Japanese resistance. His courage and skilled leadership under enemy fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
